The most famous and one of the oldest world events for High School students is the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) - see the official website at http://www.imo-official.org/. Founded in 1959, it has influenced through years on intellectual activities in many countries.
Among all the IMO medalists, there were a lot of them who eventually became great mathematicians, such as L. Babai, R. Borcherds, V. Drinfeld, T. Gowers, P. Kronheimer, L. Lafforgue and V. Lafforgue, L. Lovasz, G. Margulis, Y. Matiyasevitch, G. Perelman, A. Razborov, S. Smirnov, T. Tao, R. Taylor, J.-C. Yoccoz and others.
The olympiad itself consists of two days and each day one is asked to solve 3 problems in 4.5 hours. Here are pdf-files with the problems:

Next year's 50th International Math Olympiad will be in Bremen (Germany) - from 10th to 22nd July.
France first participated in the IMO in 1967. The best rank French team achieved was the 5th place in 1990. The senior team leader is Claude Deschamps. For more details visit http://www.animath.fr/.
